ROMNEY SOLAR HOUSE

An Alexandria couple purchased land with a view of Old Rag Mountain in Rappahannock County Virginia. They then wanted a weekend house that would not freeze should the power fail while the house was unoccupied.

Burying the small house half in the hillside and orienting it to the sun a passive solar design was achieved that would not allow the house to drop below 45 degrees during the coldest weather, without the electric heater running.

Later, a small artist studio would be added to the east providing an equally sunny studio and small office retreat from the house.

ROMNEY SOLAR HOUSE - SOUTH

The optimal southern exposure provided an opportunity to place a guest bedroom on the lower, entry level of the house.
